Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting In Norwood Young America
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Norwood Young America early Friday morning.
According to the Carver County Sheriff's office, officers responded to a call around 2:40 a.m. of a shooting at a Kwik Trip, located on the corner of Highway 5 and Highway 212.
Officials said there was an unruly customer at the gas station. An off-duty McLeod County Deputy had stopped at the gas station on his way home when the call came in regarding the customer.
The deputy and the suspect got into a fight and were both injured. The customer then took off. Both sustained non-life threatening injuries.
No more information on who was shot, who shot first or what the injuries are has been released. Both were taken to Ridgeview Hospital, and one was later transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.
The suspect was found, and officials said there was no danger to the public.
Residents of Norwood Young America say the officer-involved shooting is unsettling for their small town.
"It was a quiet town and lately there's been a lot of things going on," resident Novia Kalinowski said. "I have family members that are calling me just because it's rare."
One Hardware Hank employee said he spoke with an employee at the PourHouse Pub, who said the sheriff's office was there for questioning.
WCCO spoke to one man who said he is the father of the customer. He said his son had been drinking, was unarmed and was shot once in the arm while trying to run away. Authorities declined to comment about that claim.
Carver County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud released this statement Friday morning: "Our mission is to serve everyone with respect and dignity and to do so with honor, integrity and pride."
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has collected surveillance footage from the scene, and is leading the investigation.
