Police: Homeowner Shoots Intruder In Polk County (Wis.)
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say a homeowner in western Wisconsin shot and injured a man who was attempting to break into his home on New Year's Day.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office got a call from the homeowner, identified is 33-year-old Justin D. Schill of Centuria, Wis., at about 5:13 a.m. Thursday. He told police he was sleeping when he was awoken by somebody pounding on his door.
He told police as he approached the door, the suspect kicked it in. Schill was armed with a weapon and told the man to leave his property. The suspect then assaulted Schill before the homeowner shot the man, police said.
Officers arrived to find the suspect inside the residence lying on the kitchen floor with a single gunshot wound to the leg/groin area. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Derek W. Amoroso, was taken to St. Croix Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Regions Hospital for treatment of his injuries. As of Friday morning, he's listed in stable condition.
Authorities said Schill is not expected to face charges in the shooting. The incident is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
