Police, Crime Stoppers Hope To Solve Girl's Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- Minneapolis police are teaming up with Crime Stoppers to help solve a shooting that paralyzed a 12-year-old girl.
Police say Guadalupe Galeno-Hernandez was standing on the steps at 3400 Chicago Avenue South on Nov. 12 when a man fired a handgun from a vehicle.
Lt. Mike Fossum, from the Minneapolis Police Department said, at a news conference, that the suspect was a passenger in a small car, possibly a Toyota Corolla. The shooter stood up in the car's sunroof and fired one shot, which hit the girl in the neck. She is still hospitalized.
Fossum said the shooter is a "jackal" and a "coward" who struck an innocent girl -- which was clearly not the intended target.
Police say they need fresh information to help solve the case.
So they called upon Crime Stoppers for help. Crime Stoppers gives the public a way to provide information to police anonymously. The group can also offer rewards for information that is vital to a case.
In this case, Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000.
Volunteers from MAD DADS passed out fliers in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred regarding the Crime Stoppers award.
Volunteer Pedro Bustamente and his wife went door-to-door with the fliers, appealing to people in the neighborhood to contact Crime Stoppers if they have information on who shot the young girl.
Bustamente regularly visits Guadalupe in the hospital.
"I want to get justice for her," he said. "The perpetrator is hiding among us."
