Police: Bicyclist Killed By Truck In Downtown Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police say a bicyclist was hit and killed by a truck late Wednesday afternoon in downtown Minneapolis.
It happened at 4:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Linden Avenue West. Police say the bicycle and the truck, which was pulling a construction trailer, were both traveling in the same direction on 12th Street North towards Hennepin Avenue. The truck made a right turn at a red light onto Linden Avenue. The man who was riding the bicycle then struck the truck and was killed.
Police say the truck driver, who was not impaired, stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators.
The area was closed off for several hours as police and crime lab reconstructed the crash, which happened right in the heart of rush hour near the Interstate 394 entrance ramp.
Twelfth Street does have a bike lane that extends through the intersection, but police haven't said if the bicyclist was passing through or stopped.
"This is a busy intersection, and unfortunately as the sun goes down earlier, we had lots of people driving and a lot of pedestrians out, and it's very important for people to be especially cautious and careful in these times," said Officer Garrett Parten.
We don't know much about the bicyclist except that he is an adult.
The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting Minneapolis Police in the investigation.
