Plane Wreckage Pulled From Lake Superior
DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO) -- Two large pieces of the single-engine plane that crashed into Lake Superior earlier this month, killing the pilot, have been recovered.
The victim of the crash was 47-year-old Alexander Georg Obersteg of Steinfeld, Germany. Authorities said they believe he was leaving the Duluth International Airport en route to Steinfeld when he crashed on Saturday, June 7.
Divers recovered his body the next Monday. An autopsy ruled out the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash.
On Tuesday, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office announced that members of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Volunteer Rescue Squad -- along with divers from the Superior-Douglas County Dive Team and commercial divers -- recovered two sections of the wrecked plane.
The pieces, which were in about 135 feet of water, were taken to the surface. They will now be examined by officials from both the FAA and the NTSB.
