Patrol: Fatal Crash In Hampton Could've Been Avoided
HAMPTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- The State Patrol is investigating a fatal rollover crash along Highway 52 in Hampton, Minn. that they say could have been avoided.
The crash happened near the highway's intersection with 250th Street East Tuesday morning.
The Patrol said a vehicle going northbound clipped a Chevrolet station wagon's rear as it was moving into the left lane to pass. A 24-year-old man was killed in the crash.
Witnesses say the man had been driving at a high speed and kept darting in between cars and switching lanes.
"The last time that it changed from the left to the right lane, it clipped the back end of an SUV, lost control, came down here into the ditch and rolled over," said Lt. Bob Maskel of the State Patrol.
Maskel said the man was not wearing a seat belt and was partially thrown from the car.
Troopers believe if he had been wearing a seat belt, he probably would've survived the crash.
The identity of the driver was not yet released.
