Patrol: Driver Flees Wrong-Way Crash, Dies After Falling Over Guardrail
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A motorist was killed following a crash early Sunday morning after jumping a guardrail and falling about 40 feet, investigators say.
The crash happened along Highway 280 near University Avenue after 2 a.m.
A 2001 Nissan Altima was driving the wrong way on the highway and struck a 2002 Hyundai Elantra carrying five people. The driver of the Nissan then fled the scene on foot.
When authorities arrived, they did not find the driver of the Nissan. At about 10 a.m. Sunday, St. Paul Police found that driver dead along the University of Minnesota transit road roughly a quarter of a mile from the crash site.
Authorities said they believed the driver jumped over the guardrail after fleeing and fell 40 feet. The cause of the driver's death, however, has not yet been determined.
The driver of the Hyundai, 35-year-old Hor M. El of New Brighton, sustained serious injuries in the crash. The other four sustained non-life threatening injuries.
