Out-Of-Control SUV Slams Into Mpls. Bus Stop, Killing Woman

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - An out-of-control SUV, driving backwards, slammed into a bus stop Monday evening, killing a woman sitting at the stop.

Terrance Beauchamp Weaver rushed to what was left at the bus shelter at 45th and Lyndale to reach his mother who had been sitting inside.

But it was too late.

Terrance said his mother, 45-year-old Billie Weaver, ate at McDonald's and was then waiting at the bus stop for him to pick her up when an SUV slammed into the shelter.

"My mom was a good person, and she didn't deserve to die, and the people that ran her over are responsible for her death," he said.

Witnesses of the crash say the woman driving the SUV that hit the shelter was backing out of the McDonald's parking lot.

She accelerated, hit a parked car, careened off a tree and then crashed into the bus shelter.

"I tried to scream, I couldn't reach for the lady, it was too late," said Delena Walker.

Witnesses also said the woman had been arguing with a man who was with her before getting into the SUV.

"Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this at all," said John Elder, a Minneapolis Police spokesperson. "If it was a mechanical issue or a whole other issue, right now we're in the process of investigating."

The victim's family is thankful no one else was hurt.

"She was an innocent bystander just standing at the bus stop," her son Terrance said. "Just think if 10 to 15 people were in that bus stop."

The woman's boyfriend was also inside the bus shelter, but he was able to jump out of the way just before the SUV hit.

Police detained two people in the car that hit the stop.
