Olympics Over, McCutcheon Starts As Gophers Coach
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hugh McCutcheon is about to formally take over as Minnesota's coach, silver medal and all.
McCutcheon was named in February 2011 as the replacement for Mike Hebert, who retired after the 2010 season. While Laura Bush served as interim coach, McCutcheon completed his commitment to USA volleyball, coaching the women's national team to a silver medal at the London Olympics this month.
He will join the Gophers on Thursday for practice and guide them for his first match on Friday when they host Long Island.
McCutcheon, a native of New Zealand, also coached the men's national team to a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He is married to former women's national team player Elisabeth Bachman, a native of Lakeville, Minn.
