Suspect In Custody After Fridley Standoff
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A convicted murderer was taken into custody Tuesday evening after a standoff at a Fridley apartment building, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said.
According to Stanek, Eugene Ryan Boos, 42, was taken into custody after a standoff that lasted over five hours.
Boos had spent 17 years in prison after being convicted for stabbing a man to death in downtown Minneapolis in 1994.
Out of prison just a few months, officers were looking for him again. They said they'd been looking for him for several weeks; he'd broken his parole.
A warrant was issued for his arrest, Stanek said.
Tuesday afternoon, Fridley police were called to the apartment building on Island Drive to check on the welfare of children within the apartment building.
Fridley police made contact with Boos and were able to evacuate a number of children and an adult female.
According to Stanek, Boos and another adult female then barricaded themselves in an apartment.
Boos stated that he had a firearm and would not go peacefully.
Stanek said at one point Boos came out of the apartment with what appeared to be a handgun and shots were fired.
Boos was hit, but he retreated back into the apartment.
Anoka County Sheriff's Office Commander Paul Sommer said Anoka County SWAT team was called in around 1:30 p.m., along with the city of Anoka SWAT team, to assist.
The SWAT team set up a perimeter and negotiations began again.
Sommer said Boos refused every opportunity to comply with the SWAT team so alternative measures were used to try and drive him out, including tear gas.
According to Sommer, eventually SWAT personnel made entry into the apartment.
Boos was taken into custody and is currently receiving medical attention.
The Anoka County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate this incident.
