Officers Named Who Shot At Suspect In Shoreview
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) - A Washington state man who was killed by police after a high-speed chase on a busy Minnesota freeway repeatedly stabbed himself after emerging from his crashed vehicle, and then charged at officers with a knife, authorities said Friday.
Officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety have released the names of the two police officers: Matthew Hagen, a 15-year veteran of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and Alan Salvosa, a Brooklyn Center officer for four years.
Johnathon Dean Mar, an 18-year-old high school student from Kennewick, Washington, died from the gunshot wounds, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner determined.
The incident began at about 1 a.m. Wednesday as police were called to a rest stop on I-94 at Weaver Lake Road in Maple Grove on reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they spotted the man whom they believe was Mar getting into a vehicle and driving away. They also found a man, Matthew Paul Maffei, 23, who had been shot and killed.
Investigators say the suspect led them on a high-speed chase at speeds of more than 110 miles an hour through the north metro before crashing into a set of cable barriers in Shoreview.
They say officers then opened fire when Mar got out of his vehicle with a knife and began stabbing himself repeatedly.
When commanded to stop and ordered to the ground, Mar turned on the officers and charged them with the knife, police said.
Hagen and Salvosa said that's when they fired their weapons.
They have been placed on administrative leave as the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates the incident.
The Maple Grove Police are investigating Maffei's murder.
