MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities have identified the two officers involved in the deadly shooting of a man in the parking garage of a Minnetonka apartment complex last week.
Officials with the Minnetonka Police Department have identified the officers as James Comings and Ryan Smith. Comings has been with the department since April of 2012 and was previously with the U.S. Border Patrol from 2005 to 2011. Smith has been with the department since June of 2012 and was previously with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office from 2009 until he joined the Minnetonka force.
Neither officer has had any complaints against them or had any disciplinary action while with the Minnetonka Police Department.
Officers were called at about 8:24 p.m. on Oct. 23 to the Claremont Apartments on the 10000 block of Smetana Road on a report of a person with a gun. When police arrived, they encountered 27-year-old Michael Regner Tray of Austin in the underground garage of the complex and shots were fired. Tray was shot and killed at the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Tray died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said the case is still under investigation by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
