Officer, Suspect ID'd In Austin Officer-Involved Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Law enforcement officials have identified the officer and suspect in last week's officer-involved shooting in Austin, Minnesota.
On Wednesday at 8:10 p.m., two Austin police officers and a Mower County sheriff's deputy responded to a report of an erratic driving incident.
Officers spotted the suspect vehicle driving on the 1900 block of Oakland Avenue East. The suspect then fled and a pursuit began.
After three minutes of pursuit through Austin and reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour, the suspect's vehicle stopped at 5th Avenue NE and 19th Street NE.
When the three squad cars stopped behind the vehicle, however, the suspect put his vehicle in reverse and rammed one of the Austin police officers' vehicles. That officer then fired at the suspect, striking him.
The suspect then fled again, but was stopped by a PIT maneuver near 4th Avenue NE and 19th Street NE.
On Monday, the suspect was identified as 25-year-old Edgar Fernando Rodriguez of Austin. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, released and is now in the Mower County Jail.
The officer who fired his gun has been identified as Officer Adam Scott. He's been with the Austin Police Department for six months.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
