Officer Shot In Neck In Roseville Shooting Recovering From Surgery
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Roseville police officer injured in a shooting earlier this week is recovering from surgery.
The Roseville Police Department says surgeons operated Friday on Ryan Duxbury to remove a bullet that was lodged in the officer's neck.
State investigators say that Duxbury was shot Tuesday night by 53-year-old Jesse Werling while police were responding to an active shooter situation.
Werling died Tuesday after being shot by other responding officers. The alleged gunman reportedly fired more than 100 bullets from a scoped rifle, shooting at officers and homes in the quiet Roseville neighborhood.
Werling had a long history of mental health struggles, and officers were concerned about him weeks before the shooting.
Duxbury is a native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, where he was a star athlete. He graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth before joining the Roseville Police Department. Duxbury has been a member of the department for three years.
Shortly after he was shot Tuesday, he asked a friend to deliver the news to his family.
"His main focus at that time was his parents...so that they knew he was OK," said Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker, who is a friend of the family.
Becker called the Roseville officers heroes for how they responded Tuesday night.
