Manhunt On To Find Fugitive Who Struck U.S. Marshal's Deputy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A search is underway to locate the man responsible for running over a United States Marshal's Deputy who was attempting to serve an arrest warrant Thursday morning in Minneapolis.

It happened at about 8:30 a.m. outside the Seven Corners Apartments on the west bank of the University of Minnesota.

A jumbled electrical box and pushed-over trees show the path of the suspect's Cadillac.

An eyewitness says the man drove into the concrete wall of the ramp and then went into reverse, striking the deputy who was standing behind the vehicle.

The deputy was pinned between two vehicles before the suspect drove off.

The driver ran over curb-side trees and shrubs while fleeing the scene, leaving a scattering of chrome trim and glass on the ground.

Marshal's deputies were serving a Department of Corrections parole warrant on the subject, who was parked in his car along a curb.

The suspect backed up when he saw the deputy approach, pinning the deputy between cars and causing significant injuries.

That deputy, whose name is not being released, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. A Marshal's Service spokesman says the deputy was treated and released.

WCCO recently went along as a team of Marshal's deputies performed one of the most dangerous parts of their job: rounding up and arresting wanted fugitives.

That is because they can never know with certainty when or if a cornered criminal will turn violent. But that is exactly what happened in Thursday's incident along a quiet Minneapolis street, where an intended arrest turned into an all-out manhunt.

The deputy who was injured is an Iraqi war veteran with multiple tours of duty. He has been with the Marshal's Service for more than 10 years.
