Office Dispute Adds Minn. Capitol Redo Uncertainty
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota lawmakers have been told that a final decision on a new Senate Office Building must be made within weeks or a related renovation of the state Capitol will cost more and take longer.
The warning delivered to the Capitol Preservation Commission on Monday adds a new dimension to a politically charged debate over the office project. The building is supposed to cost $63 million with a separate parking complex increasing the project price-tag by $27 million.
Republicans are criticizing the Democrats who authorized it as supporting a lavish building. House Rules Committee approval of a design is the last known hurdle.
Senators are due to move out of the Capitol by June 2015 during the long-planned renovation and relinquish space in the remodeled Capitol because of the new building.
