Oakdale Man Gets 6 Years For Stealing Mail
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 41-year-old man was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for stealing mail and using the identities of the victims to create bank accounts to obtain cash.
Ricky W. Mariano, of Oakdale, was sentenced on two counts of theft, two counts of destruction of letter boxes, one count of bank fraud conspiracy, one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.
He was convicted on March 16, after a jury trial.
According to the indictment, Mariano -- also known as Ricky William Scharrer -- stole mail from curbside mailboxes in Dakota, Ramsey and Washington counties between July 2010 and July 2011. During a portion of that time, he destroyed mailboxes in order to access the mail.
From the stolen mail, Mariano allegedly opened up bank accounts in the victims' names to acquire funds. Mariano's nine other co-defendants were already sentenced in the incident.
