NWS: Weak Tornado Hit Waite Park
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) -- The National Weather Service is reporting that it was a weak tornado in Waite Park and a downburst packing high winds north of downtown St. Cloud that caused most of the damage in the area.
WJON-AM reports that the weather service has determined a tornado touched down just north of Interstate 94 and Highway 23 and moved northwest about 2.3 miles before dissipating in Waite Park.
The tornado was up to 30 yards wide and toppled trees in its path. It happened about 6:25 p.m. Friday
At about the same time, downburst winds of 65 to 70 miles an hour hit near downtown St. Cloud, toppling hundreds of trees which landed on buildings and vehicles.
