New Year, New Law For Minn. Motorists

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- With a new year comes a new traffic law and stepped up DUI enforcement for the state of Minnesota.
A new law says that drivers who block an intersection that is controlled by a stop light can be ticketed.
"The goal of the law is to keep traffic moving. Don't enter that intersection until you know you can get all the way through the intersection on that green light." said Capt. Matt Langer, spokesperson for the Minnesota State Patrol.

Langer also said there will be additional DUI enforcement during New Year's celebrations.
"There is additional enforcement all over the state of Minnesota. And of course any trooper that is working today is specifically looking for impaired drivers." Langer said.
With overnight lows near zero degrees and slippery roads, Langer believes tonight would be a perfect night to plan ahead.
"Driver sober, plan ahead, take a cab, take a bus, but please don't get behind the wheel." suggested Langer.
