New Rain Ratchets Up Crow River Flood Concerns
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- So far the earth has been able to absorb the 3 and a half to 6 inches of rainwater that has fallen throughout the county, pushing the Crow River slowly but surely toward minor flood stage.
Emergency Management Director Ken Carlson says what's got him worried is the ground is approaching saturation level.
"I think we are seeing that here, now, this rate of increase is very dramatic on the river, especially considering how low the Crow River had dropped from its peak several weeks ago, from the last heavy rainfall," said Carlson.
He says the roadways around Watertown, Camden Township and the city of Mayor will be watched very closely as the Crow River surpasses the 11-and-a-half-feet level, and those in low lying areas should keep their eyes open.
"The forecast shows the Crow River cresting at 11 and a half feet, which puts it into what they call minor flood stage," he added.
So far the soil has been able to absorb the continuous rainfall that totaled about 3 and a half to 6 inches during the first 18 hours. However, Carlson believes the earth has "drank" its fill and can't take much more.
