New Hastings Bridge Opening To Traffic
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This morning drivers who use Highway 61 to get to and from Wisconsin are going to notice a big change.
The new Hastings Bridge is opening. The bridge over the Mississippi has been under construction for three years. From Sky 4, you can see the new red bridge next to the old blue bridge.
Crews opened a southbound lane Monday night and plan to open a northbound lane sometime Monday. All four lanes should be open by the end of November or early December, and a pedestrian walkway will not be completed until the end of the year.
Deconstruction of the old bridge will start Wednesday. But before that starts, the city of Hastings is hosting a farewell event for "Big Blue." If the weather cooperates, people can meet at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. for a farewell walk across the old bridge.
