Nearly All Wisconsin Schools See Drop In Aid
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Nearly all Wisconsin public school districts will receive less money from the state this year compared to last.
The state Department of Public Instruction reported Friday that 411 of 424 districts will get an average of nearly 10 percent less in aid.
Gov. Scott Walker's budget approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature cut aid 8.4 percent, but the overall reduction was more because of roughly $110 million taken from public schools to pay for an expansion of voucher and charter schools in Milwaukee and Racine.
Walker argued that the loss in aid could be made up through savings districts would see through new higher pension and health insurance premium contributions from teachers.
The aid cut announced Friday is roughly the same as the estimate schools were given in July.
