NE Minn. Flooding Could Disrupt Weekend Plans
DULUTH (WCCO) -- Extensive flood damage in northeast Minnesota could disrupt your weekend plans.
Record breaking rainfall created record flooding, rain triggered mudslides and roads have washed away.
Duluth Police are urging people to stay away from roads and trails near streams, because they're compromised and unsafe.
Many highways and roads are closed in St. Louis, Carlton and Pine Counties. Emergency officials are urging drivers not to drive through floodwaters.
It's also the worst flooding in Moose Lake's history. Floodwaters that flowed from the north and west breached homes and businesses. Moose Lake State Park is closed.
Jay Cooke State Park took a beating, too. The iconic attraction, the swinging bridge, sits well above the St. Louis River. Even so, the river rose tremendously, and the force of the water washed away the bridge. The park will likely be closed through mid-July.
In the Twin Cities, the Minnesota Valley State Trail is also closed. It's in the Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area on the southwest side of the Twin Cities.
Following the wettest two day period in Duluth's history, all residents want now is for the water to recede and clear skies to move in.
