More Than 10 Inches Of New Snow In S Minn.
CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP/WCCO) -- Parts of southern Minnesota are dealing with more than 10 inches of new snow.
The deep spot is Mapleton in Blue Earth County where 10 1/2 inches had fallen by Wednesday morning. St. James in Watonwan County got 9 1/2 inches of fresh snow.
"I was expecting 1 to 3 inches," said Mapleton resident Ryan Bair, "and we had...close to a foot, 10 inches."
Dozens of schools delayed the start of classes by two hours, giving plow drivers a chance to clear the roads. New Ulm, Blue Earth Area, Marshall, and Waseca are among school districts that started late.
"Once they get the roads plowed though...to go out and get the kids is not that bad," said Shelly Goett, a school bus driver in Mapleton. "Like this afternoon, taking them home won't be bad."
Plow drivers reported Wednesday that the roads were getting better.
"The sun's coming out," said Brad Engeseth, "they're starting to clear off."
Temperatures climbed into the low to mid 20s following the snowfall. At such temperatures, the chemicals used to treat the roads are more effective.
Still, National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Borghoff says highs this time of year are supposed to be in the mid 30s.
Borghoff says no major arctic blasts are on the horizon, "so things should really start to warm up." Highs Thursday should be in the 30s statewide.
