More Space Available For Military Families

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new building has been built near the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis to help military ad veterans' families in their time of need.

A second Fisher House opened just last month in South Minneapolis where the families of those being treated at the VA hospital can stay free of charge.

"It's important for both, both sides to be able to be near and give support to each other," says Minneapolis Fisher House Manager Mary Oslund.

She says often times people forget what soldier's families go through.

"The soldier may have served, but so did his family. There is sacrifices that have been made on both parts," Oslund said.

The houses have room for dozens of families to stay as long as they need and are located right across the street from the medical center. There's everything from bedrooms and bathrooms to a common kitchen, laundry room, spacious dining room and an inviting living room.

Minnesota is home to the second Fisher House ever built and is the first state to be blessed with a second building due to the overwhelming need.

A dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. June 9 at the second Fisher House.
