Minneapolis Movie Theaters Announce Screenings Of 'Purple Rain'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The movie that sent Prince into the highest echelons of super-stardom will be screening at several locations around Minneapolis this Saturday.
"Purple Rain" was released in 1984. The movie was a box office hit that gave Prince his first and only Academy Award, for Best Original Song Score. The film cost only $7 million to make, and pulled in 10 times that.
The accompanying album was a monster hit, spawning two #1 hits -- "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" -- and three more top 40 singles.
The record went 13-times platinum, as certified by the RIAA. It also spurred controversy when future First Lady Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center called out lyrics from songs like "Darling Nikki" for suggestive content.
The Mall of America movie theater had scheduled a screening of the film for 7:30 p.m., but quickly added two more shows at 5:20 and 9:50 p.m. Click here for more information.
The Chanhassen Cinema will also be offering special showings of the movie, starting Friday.
"In honor of our hometown music legend and his years of patronage to our theater, the Chanhassen Cinema would like to invite fans to come watch the movie "Purple Rain" and celebrate the life our beloved Prince," the theater said in recent press release.
The movie will be shown at 6:50 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. Friday; 12:10 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 5 p.m., 7:25 p.m., 9:50 p.m. Saturday and 12:10 a.m. Sunday. Click here for more information.
The St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis will show the movie Sunday through Thursday at 1:05 p.m., 4:05 p.m., 7:05 p.m., and 9:55 p.m. Click Here for more information.
There will be another viewing party Saturday night at Target Field Station, with music starting at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starting at 8 p.m.
