MnDOT Construction Season Expected To Cost $1.1 Billion
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced its 2013 construction plans on Wednesday, and the numbers are staggering.
Officials said more than 300 projects are planned to improve highways, bridges and travel in general across the state, resulting in a cost of more than $1 billion. The construction slate will include up to 87 projects in the Twin Cities.
Projects for the Twin Cities include the Interstate 694/Highway 10 interchange in Arden Hills, the Highway 36 interchange at English Street in Maplewood, and I-35W/I-35E work from Elko to Eagan. There's also the Highway 169 over the Bloomington Ferry Bridge project.
In St. Paul, the new Highway 52 Lafayette Bridge continues, with demolition of the old bridge beginning next month.
One of the 193 construction zones outside of the Twin Cities includes resurfacing Interstate 94 between Clearwater and St. Cloud. Highway 78 from Battle Lake to Perham will also be repaved, and in Worthington, Highway 60 will be rebuilt with four lanes and roundabouts.
As a result, officials are urging motorists to drive with extra caution as the construction season starts and crews will be out daily on some of the busiest roads around the state.
There are also 57 transportation projects this summer that won't affect traffic, and they include work on railroad crossings, seawalls, docks, and transit centers.
