MN Zoo Announces Baby Dolphin's Name
APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO/AP) — Facebook fans have made their decision as to what the Minnesota Zoo's new dolphin calf should be named. And it was a pretty close contest.
Earlier this month, the public was asked to choose from three different names for the dolphin. The finalists, which were culled from about 3,000 candidates, were Taijah, Marais or Sealie.
On Monday, it was announced that Taijah was the winning name with about 37 percent of the vote. Marais was not too far behind, garnering 35 percent. Sealie trailed with 28 percent.
In all, about 1,800 votes were tallied through Facebook.
The Atlantic bottlenose calf was born last July to mother Allie and father Semo at the zoo in Apple Valley.
The staff calls Taijah "spunky, inquisitive, bold and sassy."
