MN Officials: Designate Sober Driver For Super Bowl
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has a message for Minnesota motorists: "Designate a sober driver before the Super Bowl Sunday to avoid the dangers and consequences of a DWI."
According to the department's Office of Traffic Safety, during Super Bowl Sunday from 2006 to 2010, four of nine fatal crashes were alcohol-related. The 44 percent rate is higher than the state's annual average of more than 30 percent. There were also 1,201 motorists arrested for DWI.
So, authorities advise Minnesotans to plan a safe ride by designating a sober driver, using a cab/public transportation or stay at the celebration.
"For any night you plan on celebrating, get in the habit of planning for a sober ride home," said Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol. "To stop preventable traffic deaths we need everyone to avoid the risk of driving impaired and always buckle up."
Witnesses of impaired driving are advised to call 911 and provide a location, license plate and dangerous behavior.
