MN Independence Party Touts State Fair Cameo By Deez Nuts
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Many attending the Minnesota State Fair make the most of their opportunity to sound off or enjoy a rap session with the politicians who attend. But what would you say to Deez Nuts?
According to a release from the Independence Party of Minnesota, one of the most buzzed-about presidential candidates in the 2016 race will make his first public appearance at the Great Minnesota Get-Together.
Nuts, whose real name is Brady Olson, is a 15-year-old boy from Iowa. He started making national headlines after filing the paperwork to run for president last month. He said he got the idea to create a campaign under that name after he heard about another high school student in Louisville who filed the candidacy paperwork for his friend's cat, Limberbutt McCubbins.
He can't actually be voted into the Oval Office, as you have to be at least 35 years old to become president. But the Independence Party of Minnesota said that his goals aren't to establish residency in the White House; his goal is to bolster the viability of third-party candidates.
"It's no surprise to Deez Nuts, nor to the IP, that the two-party system is broken," party chairperson Mark Meyer said. "We can poke some fun at the whole process this far out but some serious change is needed in our state and national campaign practices including overturning Citizens United and broader debate access."
Recently, Public Policy Polling added Nuts' name to its surveys, asking if voters would support the independent candidate in a general election with Trump and Clinton. Nuts snagged 7-percent support in Minnesota, and when the survey was done in Iowa and North Carolina his numbers rose even higher: to 8 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
