DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota's Kent Patterson stopped 40 shots and Minnesota-Duluth's Kenny Reiter held off 36 as the Gophers and Bulldogs skated to a 2-2 tie in another tight game between the Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams.
The past nine games between Minnesota (11-10-4, 8-8-3) and Minnesota-Duluth (17-5-4, 12-4-3) in Duluth have finished in a tie or one-goal win by either team.
Patterson stopped five shots in overtime, including a soft shot as time expired in OT and the Bulldogs were on a power play. The tie kept the Bulldogs from pulling into a first-place tie with idle North Dakota, leaving them one point behind the Sioux. Patterson has given up six goals on 125 shots by the Bulldogs this season.
Cade Fairchild staked Minnesota to an early lead, scoring on the power play at 9:34 of the first period. The goal snapped UMD's scoreless streak at 149:39, the longest in school history.
"We really felt like we left two points on the table tonight," Fairchild said.
The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with the Bulldogs getting goals from Justin Fontaine and Mike Connolly and Minnesota adding a tally by Jay Barriball. Connolly's goal was his first against the Gophers and Barriball's was his 125th career point.
Minnesota-Duluth finished 0-for-5 on the power play.
