Minnetonka Students Earn Tickets To 'We Day Minnesota'
MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- Students at Minnetonka High School are earning their way to the star-studded We Day Minnesota event coming up this October, and they're doing it one sandwich at a time.
"There's a lot of people out there that just need a little help," said junior Jack Giese. "Giving back is just something that everybody should do, and it's just really nice."
Members of Minnetonka's Interact Club have been doing at least one local service project a month, long before hearing about We Day. Now they're packing sandwiches that will go to people in need.
It's just one of the many service projects that will get these students their ticket to We Day.
"We live in a really great community and I think there's lots we can do to help out in small ways that don't really have any impact on us but can help others," said junior Lauren Sutfin.
Their service spreads far beyond the land of 10,000 lakes. Last month, the students purchased and donated solar lights for so students of a village in Ghana can study at night.
"Once you get into a habit they say it's hard to stop, and this is a great habit," Giese said.
And that's exactly the impact club advisor Mary Kuhn hopes We Day will have on students across Minnesota.
"That this starts a lifetime of giving and caring and doing service to help their fellow man," she said.
Minnetonka High's Interact Club is sponsored by The Minnetonka Excelsior Rotary Club.
"We Day" is on Oct. 8 at the Xcel Energy Center. About 18,000 students from across the state will be there. Students must earn their way to We Day by carrying out one local and one global service project.
