Coldest air of the season arrives in Twin Cities

MINNEAPOLIS — Fall may have been tardy this year, but it's now in full effect in the Twin Cities.

Highs will be in the 50s on Monday, with light rain possible for western Wisconsin.  

The metro will experience its first lows in the 30s on Monday night. Parts of southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin will get their first freezes and frosts of the season, but the metro's urban heat island will likely prevent the mercury from dropping below 33 degrees.

Highs will remain in the 50s on Tuesday, with Tuesday night likely the coldest so far this season with another with widespread freeze, though that's still unlikely in the heart of the metro. However, homeowners and property owners should empty any uninsulated outdoor pipes and irrigation systems ASAP.

For reference, the average first freeze/frost benchmark at MSP Airport is Oct. 18.

The metro will warm into the 70s on Thursday and Friday before dropping back into the 60s this weekend. The warmth and heavy winds on these days bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions.

Rain is possible in the metro late Friday through Saturday.
