Minnesota State's Casey Nelson Signs With Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Minnesota State defenseman Casey Nelson is forgoing his senior season after signing an entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres.

Nelson is an undrafted free agent, who is coming off a season in which he was the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's defensive player of the year. The 22-year-old was part of a team that allowed the fewest shots per game in the nation last year.

Nelson led Mavericks defensemen with six goals and 22 points last season. Overall, he had 14 goals and 60 points in 99 games.
