Minnesota Routs Michigan St. 5-1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Second-ranked Minnesota lived up to their billings Friday, scoring three times in the first period and coasting to a 5-1 men's college hockey win over Michigan State.
Michael Shibrowski, one of two Minnesota goalies rotating early in the season, lost his shutout bid late in the third period. He made 25 saves.
Ben Marshall, Nick Bjugstad and Christian Isackson had a goal each in the first 14 minutes of the Gophers' (1-0-0) season opener. Bjugstad also had an assist.
"We came out hard those first 10 minutes and set the tone," Bjugstad said. "You can't look too much into preseason rankings. We just can't let that get into our heads.
Erik Haula and Travis Boyd added goals for Minnesota, which put 42 shots on goal. Michigan State goalie Will Yanakeff had 37 saves.
Shibrowski lost his shutout bid on a goal by the Spartans' (0-1-0) Tanner Sorenson at 15:59 of the third.
"It's special for anyone who comes here and plays in this program," said Shibrowski, who was making his first career start for the Gophers.
The win was the 598th of Gophers coach Don Lucia's career.
