Minnesota Ranks No. 2 For Safest Highways

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Despite Minnesota's snowy and icy winters, the State's highways have been ranked as the No. 2 safest in the nation.

According to the research from CarInsuranceComparison.com, states with the safest highways are all located in the north. Minnesota finished just short of Iowa, which ranked in the top half for every category but one.

Here are the top 10 states:

1. Iowa
2. Minnesota
3. Indiana
4. Michigan
5. North Dakota
6. Nebraska
7. Alaska
8. Oregon
9. New Jersey
10. Vermont

The rankings are based on a variety of factors, including Internet speeding fatalities per mile of interstate, percentage of drivers without seat belts, highway bridges rated obsolete or deficient, highway deaths per 1,000 highway miles traveled, federal funding and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Rates.
