Minnesota Man Dies In Kayaking Accident
WASHBURN, Wis. (AP) -- A kayaking trip on Lake Superior ends tragically for some college friends.
Bayfield County sheriff's officials say a man from southern Minnesota died after his kayak capsized on the lake at the Apostle Island National Lake Shore Tuesday. Authorities say the man and three friends were kayaking to Sand Island when one of the kayaks started taking on water in four foot waves and became submerged. The three other kayakers turned back to help, but one of their kayaks capsized and its occupant went missing in the water. One of the remaining kayakers returned to the mainland to get help.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search, found the missing kayaker about 8 p.m. and unsuccessfully tried to revive him. The Superior Daily Telegram says the Bayfield County coroner believes the death was caused by hypothermia. The water temperature was about 47 degrees. The victim has not been further identified.
