Minneapolis Police Dept. Holds Public Hearing On Body Cameras
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Before rolling out their body camera program, Minneapolis Police are looking for input from the public. The department met with concerned citizens at the University of Minnesota Saturday.
The group talked about ways that officers will use the cameras. Supporters say they'll enhance the department's transparency and accountability. Police Chief Janee Hartau says the program will protect officers from false claims.
Citizens raised concerns about when the cameras should be turned on and off, how to protect the privacy of those recorded, and public access to the body camera footage. Some people even questioned how effective these meetings would be.
People broke out into small groups to talk about their concerns. The program rolls out in 2016.
Two additional listening sessions have been scheduled for July 11 and July 25.
