Minn. Marriage Equality Group To Live On As PAC
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — With gay marriage soon to be the law of Minnesota, the political group that led the push to pass it will live on as a political action committee to help legislators who voted for it.
Minnesotans United announced its next step Wednesday. A day earlier, Gov. Mark Dayton signed the legislation to extend civil marriage rights to same-sex couples beginning Aug. 1.
The House and Senate passed the bill with support from a handful of Republicans and from rural Democrats who represent large numbers of gay marriage opponents. The new Minnesotans United PAC will give grassroots and financial support to lawmakers from both parties who voted for the bill.
Minnesotans United started as the chief campaign group opposed to last fall's constitutional gay marriage ban. When the ban was defeated, the group shifted to lobbying for legal gay marriage.
