Minn. Man Pleads Guilty In ND Identity-Theft Case

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- A Minnesota man has reached a plea deal in an identity-theft case involving dozens of victims in the Grand Forks area.

Twenty-eight-year-old Troy Lafferty of East Grand Forks, Minn., pleaded guilty Tuesday to 20 felonies, including one theft charge and 19 counts of identity theft.

Grand Forks County prosecutor Chris Griffin tells the Grand Forks Herald the plea deal calls for Lafferty to serve a year in jail and five years of supervised probation.

Lafferty was accused of using the names and Social Security numbers of 49 people to obtain credit cards.

Prosecutors say only one of the fraudulent accounts Lafferty created was used to make purchases.

Investigators uncovered Lafferty's operation in September. Sentencing is set for Jan. 25.
