Minn. Lawmakers Take Budget Debate Down To Wire
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota lawmakers are putting in long weekend hours as they speed toward adjournment.
The House went all night before finally recessing a little after 7 a.m. Sunday. Up for debate but still awaiting a final vote is a controversial bill that authorizes a union organizing drive for home daycare providers and care attendants to the elderly and disabled.
The House and Senate will be back in session Sunday afternoon. Both are speeding through the final, DFL-assembled budget bills. Lawmakers may vote Sunday on a package of $2 billion in income, corporate and cigarette tax increases.
The House is also likely to return to the union bill, which drew demonstrators to the Capitol Sunday and intense opposition from the Republican minority.
Lawmakers have until midnight Monday to adjourn their regular session.
