Minn. House GOP Seeks Ideas For Next Session
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- House Republicans plan to reach out to Minnesotans at the State Fair and through public meetings to build a 2012 legislative agenda focused on making government more efficient.
House Speaker Kurt Zellers outlined the plan at a Capitol news conference with 15 fellow lawmakers on Thursday. He says he hopes to shift the political debate from the fight over taxes to making government work better.
That's unlikely because Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton has vowed to keep pushing for higher income taxes on the top earners.
Zellers says his caucus is looking for a fiscally focused constitutional amendment to vote on next year, possibly one that would ask voters to require a legislative supermajority for tax increases.
The Legislature can put constitutional amendments before voters without Dayton's input.
