Minn. Group Helps Haiti Victims
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A Minnesota-based aid group says it had to evacuate one of its camps in Haiti because of Tropical Storm Tomas.
Tomas came ashore Friday, flooding several towns and damaging buildings with gale-force winds.
American Refugee Committee manages four camps that house more than 80,000 earthquake victims. Camp Corail-Cesselesse lies on a flood plain and the team helped evacuate residents.
But residents began overturning tables and throwing bottles to protest what they saw as a forced removal. Camp manager Bryant Castro says about a third of the camp's nearly 8,000 residents ultimately went to shelters.
The group says the storm compounded an already precarious situation, with more than a million homeless from January's earthquake and a cholera outbreak that's killed 440 people.
