Minn. Bill Nixes Money For Planetarium, Trains
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Old battles over state borrowing for construction projects are revving up anew as Minnesota House Republicans seek to cancel previous authorization for a new Minneapolis Planetarium, rail projects and other things.
The House Capital Investment Committee plans to discusse a bill Tuesday that would nip about $60 million from projects that legislators approved years ago as well as limiting the amount of overall borrowing by the state. Committee Chairman Larry Howes, a Republican, says the move would bring savings by lowering anticipated state debt costs.
Among the planned borrowing that could be nixed: $22 million for the planetarium; $26 million for intercity rail passenger rail projects; $3.6 million for an Olmsted County public safety training center and smaller amounts for trail and recreation area upgrades.
