Mendota Heights Woman Sentenced In Swindling Case
HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) – A 55-year-old Mendota Heights woman was sentenced Tuesday in connection with a swindling case involving the girl scout group she was in charge of.
Joleen Marie Hopkins was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 30 days of electronic home monitoring and five years probation.
Hopkins pleaded guilty on June 28 to two counts of theft by swindle, both felonies. She had been charged with six counts of theft and swindling.
She was accused of stealing more than $8,200 from the accounts for the girl scout troop she led in Mendota Heights and later admitted to the theft and fraud because both she and her husband were out of work.
Hopkins admitted to using the money to pay personal bills, play blackjack at a casino and buy sports equipment for her daughters, according to court records.
