Memorial Day Events
Here are some great ideas to help you make the most of your Memorial Day weekend!
Fort Snelling
Memorial Day marks the opening of Historic Fort Snelling for the summer, and special events will be held all weekend. On Monday, Fort Snelling hosts a Memorial Day tribute and Military History Timeline from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Costumed staff will help interpret United States military history, with characters from 225 years of history, and there will be firing demonstrations at the fort. Veterans are admitted free on Memorial Day.
Minnesota State Capitol
There are several Memorials in the Minnesota State Capitol grounds in downtown St. Paul, including the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Minnesota Korean Veterans Memorial, the Peace Officers Memorial, and the World War Two Memorial.
Lakewood Cemetery
Lakewood Cemetery honors veterans and all loved ones on Memorial Day. The Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony is at 10.30 a.m. at the Soldiers Memorial. Following the Ceremony will be guided walking tours of the cemetery, horse and carriage tours, children's art activities, historical presentations, and music. The event is free and open to all.
Memorial Day Pow-Wow
A two-hour drive north to Onamia, MN, will take you to the annual Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post Memorial Day Pow-Wow hosted by AMVets Post 53. The Pow-Wow is a gathering of Native American dance, music, food, crafts and games to to honor past and present veterans on Monday 30 May. The event is free and open to all. Noon - 5 p.m.
Memorial Day/Law Day 5K Run In Willmar
There will be a run and walk event in Willmar on Robbins Island. Attendees can pre-register at the YMCA or online. There will be a youth and adult division plus a kid's fun run and toddler trot. Each participant will receive a race shirt, and prizes will be awarded in each age and gender division.
Memorial Day Murph In St. Cloud
On Monday from 2-3:30 p.m. there will be an event with several different exercises. Activities will include push-ups, pull-ups, squats, running, and a BBQ. This event will honor Medal of Honor Recipient, LT. Michael P. Murphy
Valleyfair honors our Hometown Heroes
Valleyfair will be honoring Hometown Heroes with Military Appreciation Days this Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28. Any member of the armed service, active or Veteran, will receive a free regular admission ticket. Along with free admission, members of the military will be able to purchase discount admission tickets for members of their immediate family (maximum of six) at a special military discount price of $28.50. A valid military ID must be presented at a Valleyfair ticket window May 26-28 to receive this offer.
Minnesota Civil War History At The Landing
The Landing, a historic site on the Minnesota River in Shakopee, is having a weekend of Civil War themed events on Saturday, Sunday and Memorial Day. A Memorial Day ceremony will be hosted at 2 p.m. on Monday.
