Meeting On Wolf Recovery Set For Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hosts a public meeting in northern Minnesota on Tuesday night on its latest proposal to take the gray wolf off the endangered species list Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The meeting is set for 6-8 p.m. at Davies Hall at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids.
The proposal would return responsibility for wolf management in the region to state and tribal authorities. After the public comment period closes July 5, the Fish and Wildlife Service will develop a final rule that's expected to take effect by the end of the year.
The agency's previous efforts to take the region's wolves off the endangered list ran into trouble in the courts.
The western Great Lakes region now has over 4,000 wolves, including almost 3,000 in Minnesota.
