MDA Warns Of Botulism Risk In Local Dried, Uneviscerated Fish
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is warning residents of risky fish being sold at Metro area supermarkets.
Officials say they discovered dried, uneviscerated fish for sale at three local grocery stores -- African International Market and Valu Foods African Market in Brooklyn Park, and Fountains African Food Market in Crystal.
The MDA says inspection and laboratory analysis showed several pike and bony fish varieties being sold at those locations did not have the internal organs, or viscera, removed. MDA officials said eating this type of fish can result in botulism -- a severe form of food poisoning.
In particular, officials warned of fish that are salted, dried or smoked, over five inches in length and are of the pike, kuta or bony fish variety.
Consumers who think the fish may have gotten them sick should call a doctor or other health care provider immediately.
