Mayor, Police Chief React To Deadly Weekend In Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – City leaders are reacting after the Fourth of July weekend got off to a deadly start in Minneapolis with a pair of deadly shootings that police say were not related.
Authorities said two people died in separate shootings and another three were injured early Saturday morning. Both Mayor Betsy Hodges and Police Chief Janee Harteau took to Twitter Saturday night to address the violence from late Friday and early Saturday morning.
Chief Harteau pointed out that the two deadly shootings were not random, nor were they related.
In a statement she said, "We are concerned about the level of violence and urge people to put their guns down and find another way to resolve personal conflicts."
Police have already made an arrest in one of the weekend shootings. Gunshots rang out near 34th and Dupont Avenue North around midnight Saturday. When help arrived, one man was found dead inside his home and two others were injured. They are expected to survive. That victim was identified Sunday as 28-year-old Cabrie Devon Young of Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Center said he died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death is considered a homicide.
By Saturday afternoon, officers arrested one of the men taken to the hospital.
Just a few hours after the first shooting, there was more gunfire in north Minneapolis. Officers were called to a shooting on the 2600 block of North 3rd Street. One woman died, and another woman went to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police haven't made an arrest in that case.
Mayor Betsy Hodges also took to Twitter, saying the last 48 hours have been tough for the community. She promised to continue the footwork to make sure we all stay safe now and in the future.
Neither of the victims or the suspect arrested have been identified. Police are saying these are not random shootings and are still investigating the incidents.
