Maple Grove Company Makes April Fools' Cupcakes
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) -- If you're still looking for a fun way to celebrate April Fools' Day, there's a cupcake shop in Maple Grove selling treats with a twist.
The store Nadia Cakes in Maple Grove is upping the ante this year with a special line of cupcakes. Not one to shy away from a practical joke, owner Abby Jimenez has turned April Fools' Day into one of the shop's most popular days with seven unconventional cupcakes.
Last year, Jiminez said they sold between 5,000 and 6,000 cupcakes last year, and they're expecting to double that this year.
"Last year was such a huge success, we've kind of had to brace ourselves this year," she said.
Customers can pick from flavors like peas and carrots and mashed potatoes. But the most famous April Fools' cupcake is unicorn poop.
"We've got unicorns in our kitchen and they are pooping on top of your cupcakes for April Fools' Day. It's a rainbow cupcake with a poopie on top," she said. "It is very hard to get unicorns to poop on your cupcake. It's very labor intensive."
Slightly less difficult to maneuver is the spaghetti-and-meatball cupcake that's so easy, Jiminez said you can even make it at home. She uses cream cheese frosting to make the spaghetti noodles, covers chocolate balls in raspberry or strawberry jam and then shaves some white chocolate "parmesan cheese" on top.
The trick cupcakes are available today at Nadia Cakes by the CostCo at Arbor Lakes. They cost $16.50 for a six pack, but the unicorn poop confections are $5.
